From Apprentice to Salon Owner in Four Years
Becoming a business owner doesn’t happen overnight. For Caitlin‑May Hemsley, it came after four years of dedication, strong support, and the confidence to act when opportunity arrived.
Caitlin began her hairdressing apprenticeship in 2021. During this time, she built her skills, gained hands‑on experience, and learned the foundations of the trade.
In late 2024, Caitlin made a pivotal career move. She changed employers and connected with Mas National’s Apprenticeship Consultant, Rosie McKenzie, to update her training contract. Soon after, she joined Lyneham Hair, where she completed her apprenticeship and qualified as a hairdresser in June 2025.
With her qualification complete and years of experience behind her, Caitlin didn’t hesitate when a new opportunity emerged. In December 2025, she purchased the salon. Just twelve months after qualifying, she closed out the year as both a fully qualified hairdresser and a business owner.
As 2026 begins, Caitlin’s journey has come full circle. She has welcomed her first apprentice, Maddie, into the business. Maddie previously worked at the salon through a school‑based apprenticeship. After graduating last year, she has now continued her pathway as a part‑time apprentice.
As Mas clients, both Caitlin and Maddie receive support through the Mas Achieve Program. They gain access to a dedicated team of mentors who guide them throughout their apprenticeship journey. As a first‑time employer, Caitlin also receives ongoing support from Rosie and the Mas team. This guidance helps her build knowledge, access resources, and confidently create a sustainable training environment.
Caitlin’s story is a powerful reminder that success isn’t measured by speed. It grows through preparation, commitment, and the willingness to seize opportunity when it arises.
