Mas National Empowers First Nations Woman in Civil Construction

Mas National is proud to support Shanaya, a First Nation woman from the ACT, as she pursues a Certificate III in Civil Construction. Shanaya helps to take care of her four younger brothers while building a career in this field. This opportunity is a significant step in her civil construction career, which began through the Ginninderry/Spark Program in collaboration with the Umbrella Collective.

Initially, the program provided Shanaya with valuable work experience at Guideline, where she gained several competencies in the Certificate III in Civil Construction Plant Operations. Consequently, her positive attitude and genuine interest impressed Guideline, leading to a labour position in 2023. Moreover, Shanaya’s resilience and commitment to growth have been truly inspiring.

As Shanaya aspires to become a senior labourer and foreperson, Mas National is dedicated to helping her achieve her career goals. “We’re committed to supporting emerging talent like Shanaya,” said Sue Black, ACT Manager at Mas National. “By providing opportunities for growth and development, we benefit both our people and the industry as a whole.”

Meanwhile, Shanaya’s story highlights the importance of initiatives that encourage diversity and inclusion in the construction industry. Notably, Australian women represent about 14% of the workforce and 3% of trades workers. Therefore, Mas National’s support for Shanaya is a step towards creating a more inclusive industry.
